October 26, 2011, Tokyo, Japan – Farmers from across Japan attend the rally against Japan to take part in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations in Tokyo. Japan’s government is trying to accelerate its decision on whether to join multilateral negotiations for a Pacific-wide trade pact. The TPP is a regional free trade agreement that would in principle eliminate all tariffs within the zone, including on farm products, which have been excluded from Japan’s previous free trade deals. Thousands of Japanese farmers marched through central Tokyo to push the government not to join a TPP that will likely hit the nation’s small farmers. (Photo by Natsuki Sakai/AFLO)
