May 28, 2012, Tokyo, Japan – Japan’s former Prime Minister Naoto Kan arrives for a public hearing by the Diet-appointed panel investigating the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant in Tokyo on Monday, May 28, 2012. One of the key questions during the hearing was Kan’s visit to the crippled plant the day after the power station was hit by a devastating earthquake and ensuing tsunami on March 11, 2011. Kan led the country’s disaster management at the height of the crisis. In an earlier hearing, Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata of the Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the Fukushima station, suggested that Kan’s visit hampered the handling of the crisis.
