July 21st, 2011, Susonosi, Japan – Various types of dummies for experiments stand by in their waiting room at Toyotas Higashi-Fuji Technical Center on the foot of Mt. Fuji, some 92km (about 57 miles) southwest of Tokyo, on Thursday, July 21, 2011. Toyota showed to reporters technologies aimed at increasing safety for pedestrians and elderly drivers, as part of its initiatives to eliminate traffic casualties. The technologies include a Pre-Collision System with collision-avoidance assist, glare-preventing adaptive driving beams and a pop-up hood for lessening pedestrian injury. In the PCS, Toyota uses cameras and a super sensitive radar called “millimeter-wave,” both installed in the front of the vehicle, to detect possible crashes such as a pedestrian crossing the road.
