Tokyo, Japan – With a white patch over his right eye, Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is about to addresses members of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, calling on them to unite behind controversial tax and social security reforms during a DPJ convention at a Tokyo hotel on January 16, 2012. Noda said Japan had no future if the necessary measures weren’t undertaken. Noda is staking his career on pushing ahead with a plan to double the sales tax by 2015, but his call has created a deep rift within the DPJ, resulting in nine lawmakers bolting in protest. Noda has reportedly bumped his face in the darkness at his official residence in the previous night. (Photo by AFLO)

Tokyo, Japan – President Shuichi Takayama of scandal-tinted Olympus bows deeply at the end of a news conference on January 18, 2012. Takayama told the news conference that the current leadership, including Takayama himself, would remain in office for another three months as the camera and medical equipment maker prepared for an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting in the latter half of April. Olympus set up the news conference a day after the company-appointed independent panel cleared auditing firms from responsibility for the company’s accounting scandal but found five current and former individual auditors culpable, which means Olympus won’t take legal action against its outside accounting firms for failing to uncover a 13-year effort to hide $1.5 billion in investment losses.
