Omiya Ardija Crowned J2 Champions

Omiya Ardija won the J.League division 2 championship on Saturday night with a 3-2 comeback victory against Oita Trinita. Ardija, who were relegated from J1 last season, make a quick return to the first division although earlier in the season things had seemed a lot easier when they had an 18 point lead at the top.

On Saturday, rivals Jubilo Iwata could only draw at home giving Omiya the chance to clinch promotion and the chamionship trophy in their last home match. Things started brightly but Omiya failed to score and were trailing 0-2 to two own goals after 60 minutes. Serbian forward Dragan Mrdja however pulled one back and with the crowd urging them on he scored another and won a penalty with just 7 minutes left. Japan international Akihiro Ienaga converted the penalty and Omiya were crowned champions. (Photos by Yohei Osada/AFLO)
