Tokyo, Japan – Australian-born performer and wrestler Ladybeard poses for the camera at Shinjuku Face on June 25, 2014. Originally from Australia, the pro wrestler and heavy metal vocalist is building up a reputation as an innovative performer in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. He sometimes fights in the ring and sometimes sings pop or traditional song covers in his unique heavy metal style. He started cross-dressing at rock parties in Australia when he was 14 years old just for fun, but the character Ladybeard appeared for the first time in the rings of Hong Kong’s pro wrestling scene in 2009. “In Australia it’s funny but not a big deal like within the most traditional and conservative Chinese culture” he says. Tokyo, Japan – Ladybeard performs in the ring at Shinjuku Face on June 25, 2014. His cross-dressing habit, together with his passion for heavy metal and pop music brought him to start performing as a heavy metal-idol singer. “I love the power and the execution of metal, but I love the composition of pop” says the Australian artist. In a culture like the Japanese one, where the love for mixing genres and creating new trends already exists the growth of Ladybeard’s popularity is hardly surprising. A Member of the Union Pro Wrestling Association, Ladybeard considers himself “a good guy”, but his philosophy for wrestling is to “go to bring the pain”. (Photo by Rodrigo Reyes Marin/AFLO)
