A Kyoto tradition since the 6th centruy the Aoi Matsuri (Hollyhock Festival) procession moves through Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The festival was begun in the 500s as a plea against famine and disease. Now, people from the local community take the places of the Imperial family and retinue.
