October 5, 2011: Tokyo, Japan – FREITAG from Switzerland, the popular bag and stationery maker opens its first flagship store in Asia. Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro of Torafu Architects were the two architects of Freitag’s new building design. The founders of FREITAG, Daniel and Markus Freitag, made their first bag using recycled truck tarpaulin from a used car in 1993. Until today, the look of used looking colored bags made from recycled parts of second-hand cars can be seen on the backs of hipsters and bike messengers in Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya and other fashion trend setting areas in Tokyo.
