Designer Kenjiro Sano’s logo had been critized after Belgian, Olivier Debie, instigated legal action due to similarities to his logo for the Theater de Liege in Belgium. Beleaguered Sano has also recently faced other questions of plagiarism over his past designs.

Following an emergency meeting, Muto said the organizing committee would scrap the emblem designed by Kenjiro Sano. The logo scandal is another embarrassment for Japan, which scrapped the initial design of the main stadium for the Games following a public uproar over its skyrocketing estimated cost.
