Cats outnumber residents almost 10 to 1 on Aoshima island, off the coast of Ozu city in Ehime prefecture. (All photos by Yoshio Tsunoda/AFLO)
Our reporter visited the island on Tuesday, March 22, 2016.
There are now over 100 cats living on the island which has only 16 elderly residents.
The cats were originally brought to the island to kill the mice infesting local fishermen’s boats.
This isn’t the only cat island in Japan though and there are also rabbit islands too.
